Mount Kenya Hike 4 Days Sirimon – Chogoria Route Itinerary Day 1: Nairobi - Sirimon Park Gate- Old Moses camp. (3,300m) 3 - 4 hrs., 9km walk, 680m ascent Our journey to trek Mount Kenya begins with a pick-up in Nairobi. We’ll pick you up in Jomo Kenyatta International Airport Nairobi or your hotel and take a 3-hour drive to Nanyuki town. The drive continues to Sirimon Park Gate where we have lunch before commencing our hike. We begin trekking Mount Kenya by going through the montane forest and lush bamboo zone. The landscape transitions to the high-altitude heath and moorland as we continue with our trek. Eventually, our Mount Kenya trek brings us to our first camp: Old Moses camp, at 3,300 m of altitude. We have dinner and stay overnight at the camp. The day’s hike is a gentle one that take 3 – 4 hours and sees us gain a 680m elevation. Day 2: Old Moses camp - Shipton camp (4200m), 7 hrs., 14km walk, 900m ascent After breakfast, the trek continues uphill towards Ontulili river. Our track veers right at the junction shortly after leaving camp as we make our way through the moorlands. Once we reach Ontulili River, we rest for a while and refill our water bottles while taking in the scenery. The journey to climb Mount Kenya continues onwards towards Mackinder’s Valley. Along the way, we cross our second river: Liki North River. The views from Mackinder’s Valley are phenomenal. You’ll be able to see Mount Kenya’s three main peaks (Point Nelion, Batian, and Lenana) to the front and the vast landscapes below. The views from this day are the main reason why Sirimon is considered one of the best Mount Kenya trekking routes. A full day of trekking Mount Kenya finally brings us to Shipton camp. We have dinner at camp and rest early in preparation for summiting day. This day’s trek will see us ascend 900m closer to Point Lenana. Day 3: Shipton camp - Pt Lenana (4985m)- Mt Kenya Bandas (2800m) 11-12 hrs., 29km, 785 ascent, 2,085m descent The day starts early at 3 am in order to catch the sunrise atop the highest mountain in Kenya. Trekking Mount Kenya on the start of this day takes us through frozen scree onto a rocky path which eventually leads us to Point Lenana. Although we’ll be hiking Mount Kenya in the dark, we’ll be equipped with handheld torches. If we’re lucky to have a cloudless sky, heaven will light up the way for us. Once our 3-hour climb brings us to the peak, we’ll watch the African sun rise and illuminate the land. The scene of the sunrise slowly bathing the mountain and the vast landscapes below with golden rays is awe-striking. We’ll begin our descent via the Mount Kenya Chogoria route after some time on the peak. We’ll take a short trek to Minto’s hut, have breakfast, and rest for a while. The rest of the day will be spent trekking to Mount Kenya Bandas. Along the way, we’ll pass through the Gorges Valley and enjoy views of Lake Michaelson, Giant Billiards Table, and the Temple among others. Once we reach Mt. Kenya Bandas, we’ll have dinner and enjoy our last night on the mountain by the log fire. Trekking Mount Kenya on this day will see us hike 29 km, ascend 785m, and descend 2,085m. Day 4: Mount Kenya Bandas - Chogoria town – Nairobi Our last day will consist of a short Mount Kenya trek up until we find our vehicle.
